What a gateway actually does
An AI gateway sits between your app and the model providers. With RSFlowHub, your app sends one authenticated request; the gateway picks the configured model, applies the task prompt, checks your credit balance, calls the provider, validates the output and returns it in a fixed envelope. If the provider fails, it retries on a backup model.
Hidden costs of going direct
- Separate accounts, keys and invoices per provider.
- Prompt and schema maintenance for every feature, repeated on each model upgrade.
- Your own retry, fallback and timeout logic.
- Usage tracking spread across several dashboards.
None of these are hard alone, but together they slow down shipping small AI features.
Trade-offs to be aware of
A gateway adds a small hop in front of the model call, and you depend on its uptime as well as the providers. It also abstracts away provider-specific parameters. For open-ended assistants or very large custom workloads, direct integration may still be the better fit.
